BREAKING NEWS: Boil water order issued for Falmouth

Falmouth residents ordered to boil water

From the MA DEP: "We just declared a boil order for the Town of Falmouth.

We were notified yesterday that there were Total Coliform and E Coli positive samples at 5 locations collected on June 7th. Repeats have been clean (no coliform) with the exception of two locations since June 9th. The two locations North Falmouth and Woods Hole, have been positive for total coliform but negative for E. Coli. We have asked Falmouth to increase chlorination and to flush the two problem areas. It is likely that these areas are somewhat dead ends and quite a distance from the treatment plants.

This will be a Tier 1 public notice with radio and TV coverage. Newspaper notice will be tomorrow. We will be telling folks to through out ice, beverages, etc made with tap water since June 7th.

The suspected problem is related to a heavy rain event on the weekend prior to June 7th. It was noted that there was increased chlorine consumption at the Long Pond surface water treatment plant.

if the tests were positive on June 7, why did it take until June 15th to alert to the public ? Seems likely that the dangerous period of time to consume water has already passed.

There was no reverse 911 call to my home or any of my neighbors. This system did not work. If we had not gotten a call from someone who happened to be reading an article online from the Cape Cod Times we never would have known. We have a house full of guests including 3 children, that potentially get sick because of this lack of communication.

The town website (and the newspaper reporters) really should clarify that the town found out from DEP yesterday, and not make it sound like the town has known since June 7th.

I've been having stomach pain for over a week now and have a swollen lymph gland in my neck. I'm physically active and drink a lot of water. I think the town should advise people like me, who might be sick, on how to seek treatment if they're feeling ill. I never received a reverse 911 call either.

I second the original comment. What too so long to notify us???? This is unacceptable.

Nobody I know, and I talked to dozens today, received a reverse 911 call until the afternoon on June 16th. Friends called us last night to inform us. I sincerely hope the Board of Selectmen take up the issue of notification in a public session and find out what went wrong and how to get the notification system fixed. Also, why was the Town's website not used immediately with a warning on the home page. We called the water department last night and there was not even a recorded message. A very poorly managed situation so far.
