Litter

In case you haven't seen it, East Falmouth's own Shirley Faitoute has a letter in today's Cape Cod Times entitled, "Litter affects us all; all must combat it."

Shirley makes a good point that we must all pitch in and help keep our town clean, and many of the folks posting in the related forum agree.

Given the current budget issues in Falmouth (and, as Shirley notes, the fact that the state is responsible for Route 28), we're not likely to see much action from the selectmen. However, the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce could - and should - take the lead on this.

For example, for many years the Buttery (a local bakery) did the Adopt-A-Highway thing along Route 28 in East Falmouth. The Buttery has long since closed (a shame, really - they had THE best cinnamon buns), but no other business stepped up and took over their litter patrol. If the state isn't cleaning things up, it's usually Shirley and her family, but that's quite a job.

Perhaps the Chamber could encourage a local business to take on this responsibility. Or perhaps the Chamber itself could do this.

Apparently there was quite a response to the litter article in the Cape Cod Times. Today they had an editorial (http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080128/OPINION/801280332) in which Alice Batchelor of Falmouth mentions Shirley's anti-litter campaign.
