With his suggestion of transferring development rights from Webster Woods to a different parcel in Woods Hole, Chairman Kevin Murphy has done better. He should be applauded for thinking outside the box, and this option should be fully explored.
Webster Woods is treasured by the Woods Hole community for what it is – an undeveloped, mature forest - much like the way the Coonamessett River cranberry bogs are treasured by the East Falmouth community for what they are – a working, historic landscape.
Rather than stick to the current plan, which will close some bogs and cut up others, we should give East Falmouth the opportunity to develop a viable alternative. Woods Hole has, in essence, been given a “do over” on Webster Woods; the selectmen should be fair and give East Falmouth a do over on the cranberry bogs.
(This post was also published as a letter in the Friday, January 11, 2008 edition of the Falmouth Enterprise. The title may not be the same; I didn't pick up that particular edition, so I'm not sure what title the paper used.)
