I was never opposed to the New Silver Beach treatment plant - I was opposed to the public funding of the project. If you didn't know why before, it should be obvious now.
On Monday night, the selectmen violated the public trust when they declared that the residents of New Silver Beach will pay no more than $32,424.24.
From town meeting last fall through the election this spring, the people of Falmouth were repeatedly told that New Silver Beach would be a 70/30 split; the taxpayers would only pay 30 percent of the cost. However, if cost overruns are going to be borne entirely by the taxpayers, we will be paying more than 30 percent. And if history is any guide, it will be far, far more.
The West Falmouth sewer plant, the DPW garage, the high school...Falmouth has a miserable track record when it comes to completing public projects on time and under budget. Unfortunately, the selectmen overlooked this fact when they declared that you and I will be picking up the tab when this project goes south.
It's all promises, promises, and politics as usual.
What if there are no cost overruns? I'll personally eat this letter on the steps of town hall.
