James Madison, one of the Founding Fathers, said that.
If the government fails to listen to the people, the people will replace the government. In some places, that may mean a bloody rebellion, but here in the United States, we have peaceful rebellions on a regular basis.
We call them elections.
Last fall, the people opted to "revolt" against the incumbents in a big way and the Democrats gained control of Congress for the first time since 1994. My door to door campaigning has revealed a similar trend here in Falmouth with respect to our incumbent board of selectmen.
Some folks have suggested that I'm simply stirring up trouble with my "We CAN do better" slogan and my willingness to point out the flaws in town government. In reality, I'm stirring up nothing; I'm simply listening to and addressing the people's concerns.
If someone believes that I'm just causing trouble, then they have no idea what democracy is all about.
And they're obviously out of touch with the people whom they were elected to serve.
We CAN do better.
